CSLB offers business tips for contractors about working with consumers

The multibillion dollar home improvement industry in California continues to grow at a record pace. But with it comes disagreements between contractors and consumers. Clear communication is an effective way for contractors to understand their customers’ needs and meet their expectations.

The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) has an ongoing educational program to help inform homeowners about the benefits of hiring and working with licensed contractors. A number of free publications can be ordered or downloaded online. Many contractors use these publications to help their customers better understand the contracting process. In addition, participation in consumer education can help build a contractor's credibility.

The board's outreach through the news media urges homeowners to hire only licensed professionals and verify a license before hiring a contractor. A roofing contractor can prove he runs a reputable business by showing his customers a pocket license and directing them to CSLB’s Web site to verify their license status.

Roofing contractors should include their license numbers on contracts, business cards, advertisements and anything that carries their companies’ name, including trucks. Roofing contractors should provide at least three references and contact information of previous customers to potential clients. Proof of membership with a contractors association(s), union, chamber of commerce or another professional organization also can boost a contractor’s credibility.

Although general liability insurance is optional, CSLB encourages contractors to carry it, in addition to workers' compensation insurance, which is required by law. Providing proof of both types of insurance, in addition to appropriate contact information, can help make a sale to potential customers and increase business opportunities.

A contract probably is the best communication tool between a contractor and customer. CSLB recommends contractors thoroughly review contracts with their consumers to ensure customers understand what they are getting and when the job will be completed. This means putting specific information in writing, such as make, model, color, type of materials and project timeline. If details are clarified in writing, it will reduce the chance for disagreement or confusion. The CSLB's new publication, Terms of Agreement, a Consumer Guide to Contracts, can help customers understand contracts.

Providing homeowners with information about the contracting process may mean the difference between winning and losing a job. Some helpful publications include What You Should Know Before You Hire a Contractor and pamphlets about roofing, landscaping, swimming pools and mechanic's liens.
