Tom Shanahan attended Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., graduating with a bachelor's degree in business management; he also holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Chicago. He worked in the hotel industry for 11 years before joining the NRCA staff in 1989, where his responsibilities included senior hotel management and safety, loss control and departmental management.
Tom's responsibilities include the education and risk management departments' seven staff members who are responsible for 10 committees that address the education, health, safety and insurance issues affecting the roofing industry.
Tom is recognized for his contributions to NRCA's Professional Roofing magazine, development and delivery of educational programs, and knowledge of safety-related issues and regulations. He is a regular speaker at roofing industry events covering safety, health and educational issues. Tom also teaches numerous classes addressing health and safety and effective communication, management and training strategies.
In 2008, Tom was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Labor to serve on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health. He also has served on the oversight committee for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH's) Prevention Through Design national initiative. Tom is active in regulatory actions affecting the roofing industry, working with officials from the Department of Transportation, OSHA and NIOSH. OSHA and NIOSH have invited Tom to serve on a number of task forces, such as training, fall protection, residential safety and asphalt fumes.
Tom is an active member of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI), serving on its A10 Committee on Safety in Construction and Demolition Operations; the A10.32 Fall Protection; and A10.38 Safety Program Elements. He has acted as vice chairman of the A10.23 Back Injury Prevention and the A10.24 Roofing subcommittees.
